At the Emelin
with Cyrille Aimee
Jazz
Emelin Theatre
153 Library Lane
Mamaroneck, NY   See Map
Improvisation is not just a technique for Grammy nominated artist Cyrille Aimée, it’s a way of life. The acclaimed vocalist ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by The New York Times. Among countless accolades, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. As an actress, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Stephen Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center which inspired her to dig deeper into Sondheim’s repertoire, resulting in her fourth and most recent album, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure. She’s shared her story via master classes, a TEDx talk, and a few addresses at the Conference on World Affairs.

Howland Cultural Center
477 Main St.
Beacon, NY   See Map
Join us for this exciting and varied program in the unique and stunning Howland Cultural Center! Led by conductor and music director David Rudge, we open with two works by American composers: Arthur Foote's soulful Air, and Jessie Montgomery’s Strum which draws on the characteristic strumming of string instruments and, she writes, “salutes American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement." Next we feature concert pianist Sandro Russo, a recording artist who has toured internationally to rave reviews, as soloist in Liszt’s highly dramatic Malédiction for piano and string orchestra. We end with Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade for Strings, a work that runs the gamut stylistically and expressively. It begins with a homage to Mozart, flows into a lilting waltz, offers a melancholy elegy at the heart of the work, and comes to a rousing and dance-like conclusion. Expect the unexpected!

Johnathan Blake is one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation. Heralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist,” he has proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician. Blake’s gift for composition and band leading reflects years of live and studio experience across the aesthetic spectrum. A frequent presence on Blue Note records over the past several years, Blake has contributed his strong, limber pulse and airy precision to multiple leader releases from Blue Note artists including Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Breathe (2021), All in My Mind (2018) and Evolution (2016) and Kenny Barron’s Concentric Circles (2018).

Johnathan Blake's debut release on Blue Note Records entitled 'Homeward Bound' signals shifting tides for a career that’s yet to crest. The drummer, composer, and progressive bandleader continually refines and renews an expression bonded to the lineage of Black music that fluoresces across the album.

Hank Woji
Singer-Songwriter, Americana
Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online and on the radio, NY   See Map
A self-described ‘Jersey Shore Ex-Pat turned West Texas Desert Rat’, Hank cut his musical teeth as a bassist in the vibrant Asbury Park, NJ music scene of the 1980s & 90s. In Spring 2001 Hank moved to Houston, TX, and found his new musical voice as a Singer Songwriter, but it was his move, in 2009, to the far West Texas desert town of Terlingua, that has most reshaped his life and his music. Critics have described Hank’s music as “acoustic-wielding, sharply observed, Americana all the way” and being “in the best tradition of the Texas troubadours like Guy Clarke, Townes Van Zandt and Butch Hancock.” His new CD “Highways, Gamblers, Devils and Dreams” debuted in Sept. 2023 at #5 on the EuroAmericana chart and #3 on the FAI Folk chart. Over his 40+ year music career, Hank has performed with such notable artists as: David Amram, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger. A proud union member of AFM Local 1000, he’s based in Terlingua, TX and tours nationally.
